about

In April 2007 I had a near death experience. The back of my head was scraped by the bullet of a sniper in South London. That served as a turning point that sparked a course of events that lead to the creation of this album. I just stopped! I submerged myself in existential questioning. What was I doing in my life, why wasn’t I achieving those lofty goals I had set for myself and thought I deserved? Why was I stuck and couldn’t move on neither personally nor professionally?

I went on a pilgrimage in September 2007, came back and decided I needed to lock myself away and write music, on my own, no collaborations. My insides were screaming at me to be authentic and purposeful. I had to know if I really had any talent or if all this pursuit of recognition as an artist had been based on fear and insecurity in which case I had to let it all go. The result is these songs written between October 2007 and February 2008.

Neil, who produced this album, had been my guitar teacher. I knew he was also a very accomplished musician and producer, and it was with some trepidation that I asked him to listen to my early demos. As it turns out his wife found the CD in his car, listened to it and then handed it to him and said there was something special there. Thank you Julie! Neil agreed to produce the album, and over weekends in the spring and summer of 2008 we met, recorded, listened, mixed and cried.. well I did at least! I was amazed that he produced what I heard inside my head. It all culminated with a cracking celebratory gig in November 2008.

Early 2009 saw great MySpace feedback and early industry meetings which looked promising. Mark Lord came on board and mixed and mastered early versions of Ivory Tower and Not Alone (then called Crying) which I promptly self released. I decided to do a mini tour in London to get audience feedback. Hard work but glorious fun. We also shot the brilliant video to Ivory Tower and I felt like I was on my way to the top. After several years in the business I was finally gonna get my break!

Then it all crashed. Those who were early supporters turned into sharks and I was consequently hacked apart- who was I, what kind of artist, what kind of sound was this etc etc. Doors slammed shut everywhere I turned. I was stunned. I was already broke from putting all my efforts into sustaining myself whilst writing and producing this project. It nearly also broke my spirit to imagine that I would have to give up the dream of releasing my own album.

In the autumn of 2009, after a few months in stunned silence, I decided that I had to find a way to finance the mixing and mastering of the whole album and self release it. I couldn’t live with myself if I left this unfinished. I finally let go of the need to be associated with ‘hot shots’ and just wanted to honour the album for what it is- great music. I contacted Mark Lord to see what kind of a deal we could strike. It turned into a much better one than I had expected. I did not know that, apart from being a brilliant mastering and mixing engineer, Mark also ran his own label, and he turned around and offered to release the album.

From January to April 2010 Mark and I set about remixing the album, now informed by all the previous two years’ events. It was an amazingly liberating, creative and enjoyable process where Mark and I truly bonded. The result is an evocative, fragile, powerful and glorious album that I can only feel a privilege to have written and be part of. I truly feel that I have served my muse to the very utmost of my human capability. I share it with you in joy, love and gratitude and hope that it will inspire you to dream, live to your fullest capacity and above all love.

Track Name: The good dog
The Good Dog

(70bpm, 4/4, open D tuning)

Hey now here’s the day
Homecoming for this stray

Been a real good dog sitting there at your feet
Watching waiting quiet who ever I meet

Hell now to your way
Let them lead me astray

One by one they’re stepping out of line
Saying friend you are one of our kind

One step two steps closer to deliverance

Hear now what I say
The good dog knows the way

One step two steps closer to deliverance

Come on now and follow my way
Come on now let me lead you astray

One step two steps closer to deliverance

Come on now and follow my way
Come on now let me lead you astray

(G, B, A, G, C with E in bass over E and B)

I open up my rainbow heart
I’m hoping that I might just get
Another start

I crawl out from this cave
Where I myself so well depraved

I bet you’ve seen what I’ve seen
I bet you’ve travelled down the same stream

So open up your rainbow heart
Keep hoping that you might just get
Another start

(first position: G, B, A, G, Barr chord: C with E in bass over E and B)

Umaoo

(Barr chords: C with E in bass over E and B, C with C in bass over E and B, B)

I step left I step right
Where’s the way out of this unquestioned life

I bet you know what I mean
I bet we share the same dream

So open up your rainbow heart
Keep hoping that we might just get
Another start

Track Name: Not alone
Not Alone
(Eflat, Capo 3rd)

[C, Aadd9 (Asus2), Dminor, G]

You lift your weary head
And stare into the headlights
Will you choose to slip away
Who will know you took this road today
On your way
To let it all go down

[Aminor, C, Aminor, C]

I am crying too
You are not alone
I am crying too
You are not alone

Then you hear a voice
And wonder in that instant
Did you fall into someone’s arms
Or are you standing on that road you know
Will go down
To where you were before

I am crying too
You are not alone
I am crying too
You are not alone

[C, Aadd9 (Asus2), Dminor, G].. I think..

And just so you know
I’m there for you always
No need to make a choice
I’ll never go, no never go away

Track Name: Jesus' diary
Jesus' Diary
(70bpm, 4/4)

(picking pattern: E, F sharp, B, E, F sharp, B, F sharp, D, D, A, A, G sharp, G, E)
Last night I had a dream where Jesus came and said to me
Hello there have you met my friend his name’s the Devil Man
He’s been there holding your hand for as long as you’ve been alive
So you’d better listen now to what I’ve come to make you see

(A5, G5, F5, E)
You’ve got to let it go

He’s got his arms around everything that you hold dear
You see we made a pact of who could get the greatest souls
And he’s a clever man who know just how to get you high
But what I’m offering you is greater than gold can buy

You’ve got to let it go

(A, G, B, B, B flat, A, G, B, B)
I got down on my knees and prayed to Jesus come save my soul
He smiled and said don’t worry I’ve got you in the fold

So now you can let go

This old life
Is putting a strain
On the blood inside my veins

These coal fired heaps
Of crap I wanted to keep
It’s leaking into my brain
It’s polluting me insane

Although my situation is dire
I keep stoking the fire
For the poison’s my friend
Holds my hand till the end

This old life
Is putting a strain
On the blood inside my veins (x4)

Now the smoke has filled the air
But do we care
Don’t you find
You wanna do it one more time

Track Name: Northern lights
Northern Lights

(key: Bm, capo 2nd fret, 3/8, 60bpm)

(Bm, G, Fsharp, D)

I have got that urge again
To do wrong
Dark and bare desire
That is oh so strong
To push it all too far
To cross the finish line
To let the demons win again
Commit the final crime

Kom och lägg dig långsamt ner
Min kraft har förrunnit mig
Vi kan ej träta mer
Du vet att jag älskar dig
Jag måste se ett slut
På denna hårda strid
Jag kan ej leva livet ut
Utan själafrid

Try break my will
Try make me weak
Try tie me still
I’m not a pretty freak
I call out to the world
Come have a bloody feast
On the aching heart
Inside this pretty beast

Track Name: 7th seal
7th Seal

(4/4, 130 bpm to 150 bpm)

(E, G5, C, D)

I sat down with my shadow to play
A game of chess to pay for my way
He’ll choose his colour now
Black is for you and I
As his favourite pawns we will pray
That we’ve got the might
To use the Maker’s light
To shine our way out through the haze

(E5, D5, C5)

In this game
You gotta see it through till the end
Lay down and die
You’re a wasted suicide

He put a great opponent in our way
Concealed him well in the shadows of the day
We’ll never know his name
He’s master of this game
Why do you wanna know is what he’ll say
So we standing strong
Until the break of dawn
When the light will come and waste him away

In this game
You gotta see it through till the end
Lay down and die
You’re a wasted suicide

(Arpeggio E to E/D/C/B)

La, la,la,la....

In this game
You gotta see it through till the end
